The nationwide anti-quota and anti-discrimination student movement began in July 2024. Then, students, teachers, lawyers, and people of various professions participated in the movement and later it turned into a mass uprising. During the anti-quota and anti-discrimination movement, leaders and activists of various classes of Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League and armed terrorists ambushed unarmed students and the public who were protesting with domestic and foreign weapons in different areas of the capital and various districts of the country. As part of which, on July 18, 2024, while students and the general public were peacefully protesting against quotas and discrimination in various areas under the Yatrobari police station in the capital Dhaka, several armed terrorists armed with firearms, ram-da, chapati, hockey sticks and various types of weapons opened fire on the unarmed students and the general public who were protesting. The bullets hit the victim Md. Sohel Rana on the right side of the head and the left side of the chest, causing multiple bullet wounds and he was left lying in a bloody state on the Jatrabari Kajla Highway. Later, pedestrians and peaceful protesting students and the public rushed victim Sohel to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where victim Md. Sohel Rana, father Md. Lal Mia, died during treatment. On the charge of murdering the victim Sohel Rana, the victim’s brother filed a murder case against one of the complainants, Suman Munshi, and approximately 150 accused at Jatrabari Police Station. Case No. 58/840 dated 20/09/2024 AD. Section 302/201/34 Penal Code 1860. Upon learning of the case, the accused Suman Munshi and other accused went into hiding.
Based on the petition received by the Jatrabari Police Station in the said incident, a RAB-10 operation team increased intelligence surveillance to bring Suman Munshi and other accused involved in the murder of an innocent common man who was protesting in the Jatrabari area to justice.
In continuation of this, yesterday, February 19, 2025, at approximately 12:30 PM, the said RAB-10 operation team conducted an operation in the staff quarter area under Demra Police Station in the capital with the help of information technology. In the said operation, the accused Suman Munshi (34), father-Ali Munshi, son-Miachan Munshi, Thana-Jazira, District-Shariatpur, who was involved in the murder of an innocent general public who participated in the movement on the Kajla Highway under Jatrabari Police Station in the capital on July 18, 2024, was arrested. Initial investigation revealed that the said accused is known to be the accused in 13 other cases including the murder case in Jatrabari Police Station in the capital.
The process of transferring the arrested accused to the concerned police station is under process.
