An awareness-raising and cleaning campaign to prevent plastic pollution on the coast and in the sea has been organized in Nazirartek, Cox’s Bazar, with the participation of marginal fishing family members and students.
Last Saturday, a program was organized to raise awareness about how plastic or packaged products used in fishermen’s daily lives are mixing with the sea and the environment and what the consequences may be in the near future. About 50 fishing families, 25 school students, local fishermen, leaders of fishermen’s associations, teachers, senior upazila fisheries officers, and other individuals participated in this program. In this program, students and female members of fishing families collected about 80 kg of plastic waste through a cleanup drive. Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Sujoy Pal was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the program.
He said, due to the increase in plastic pollution in the sea, fish production will decrease at an alarming rate. Moreover, microplastics will enter the fish body and later enter the human body, causing fatal diseases including cancer. Therefore, everyone should be aware of the use of plastic and plastic waste management. Fisherman leader Abul Kashem said, the plastic food or drink packets that fishermen take to the sea will not be thrown into the sea, but will be brought to the pond and thrown at the waste disposal site. In addition, the waste used at home will not be thrown anywhere, but will be thrown at a specific place. At the end of the program, fishermen’s family members, students and others took the climate oath to work on climate change and protecting the environment
