Habibur Rahman:
A section of the anti-discrimination student movement and district lawyers in Comilla have demanded the expulsion of 20 lawyers. They allege that these lawyers are working on behalf of the fascist Awami League government to suppress the movement and kill the protesters.
Since the August 5 incident, these lawyers have been accused of trying to create chaos in the court premises. In particular, Comilla District Bar Association President Mostafizur Rahman Liton and General Secretary Mohammad Jahangir Alam Bhuiyan have been accused of being involved in protecting the political interests of the Awami League for a long time.
However, recently, when these two lawyers tried to enter the court, angry lawyers and students opposed it. On Thursday, protesters hung banners with the names and pictures of 20 lawyers in front of the court building. On the same evening, the students locked the rooms of the president and general secretary of the Bar Association.
The students have made it clear, “Lawyers representing those who attacked the anti-discrimination student movement will not be able to enter the Comilla courthouse. If anyone tries to enter, they will be repelled.”
There are allegations that Mostafizur Rahman did not allow pro-BNP lawyers to enter the courtroom while he was PP. He also obstructed the hearing of Begum Khaleda Zia’s case. In addition, it is being claimed that the woman’s husband committed suicide due to an illicit relationship with a female lawyer by abusing his power.
Based on the complaints of students and lawyers, banners with the pictures and names of 20 identified lawyers have been hung. The banner reads, “Expelled from the court the accomplices of the killers of the anti-discrimination student movement.”
In this regard, Abu Raihan, the Comilla metropolitan convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, “These lawyers, who are friends of the Awami League, are conspiring to protect the murderers. That is why their pictures have been published on the banner. Awami fascism will have no place in Comilla. Wherever fascism is, it will be resisted.”
Comilla District Bar Association General Secretary Jahangir Alam Bhuiyan said, “There is no government directive that legal aid cannot be provided to the accused in the July-August cases. According to the constitution and the provisions of the Bar Council, every lawyer has the right to perform his professional duties.”
When asked about this, Mostafizur Rahman (Liton) could not be reached on phone.
The incident has created extreme tension in the court premises in Comilla. The protesters have warned that more stringent measures will be taken if necessary to counter fascism.
