Joint forces have arrested two Jubo Dal leaders with weapons and drugs in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Selim Malik confirmed this information on Friday (February 7) afternoon.
Earlier, a joint operation team of the army and police conducted a raid in the upazila’s Botmari Bazar on Thursday (February 6) night and arrested them. The arrested are Ahsan Shahid Suhrawardy, the social welfare secretary of the recently dissolved district Jubo Dal committee, a corn trader in Botmari Bazar of the upazila, and Golam Rabbani, a Jubo Dal activist from the same area.
Police and locals said that former Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal leader Ahsan Shahid Suhrawardy set up his business chamber as a torture cell under the guise of corn business. During the previous BNP-Jamaat alliance government, Shahid was the president of the Bhotmari Union Chhatra Dal. Later, Shahid also secretly occupied the post of the district Jubo Dal. In the meantime, he joined the Awami League during the Awami League. During the Awami League period, he pretended to be a former social welfare minister. After the fall of the Awami League, Shahid started his reign by pretending to be a former leader of the Juba Dal district committee.
Based on a secret tip-off from the locals, a joint team of the army and police conducted a raid on the Shahid Chamber of Commerce in the Bhotmari area on Thursday night. At that time, several sharp country-made weapons including Ram Da, Chinese axes and several bottles of liquor were recovered from the chamber. At that time, Shahid Suhrawardy and his associate Jubo Dal activist Rabbani were arrested. The police filed a case against those arrested in this incident at Kaliganj Police Station under the Arms and Narcotics Act.
Jahangir Alam Angur, convener of Kaliganj Upazila Jubo Dal, said, “Shaheed was once the president of Chhatra Dal. Later, we did not keep him as a member as he joined the Awami League. However, he secretly took the editorial post of the recently dissolved district Jubo Dal committee. I have also heard that the joint forces have arrested him.”
Hasan Ali, the secretary of the recently defunct district youth wing, said that Shahid was an editorial officer in the district committee. He was later expelled on various charges. He currently does not hold any position in the youth wing.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Salim Malik said that two people named Shahid Suhrawardy and Rabbani were arrested with weapons and drugs in a joint force operation. A case has been filed against them under the Arms and Narcotics Act.
