A pickup van in Laksam, Comilla lost control and fell into a pond on the side of the road, killing 1 person and injuring 4 others. The identities of the casualties were not immediately known.
The incident took place on February 5 (Wednesday) in Dogaiya Chandpur village of Gobindapur union of the upazila.
According to local sources, at around 4 pm on that day, the driver of the pickup van, Md. Monir Hossain (38), son of Md. Rafiqul Islam of Dogaiya Chandpur village, dropped off some cows belonging to traders at the local Ashirpar market. Later, while the driver was going home with the vehicle, it suddenly lost control in front of the house of the Dogaiya Chandpur Shaheens and fell into a pond on the side of the road.
At that time, 5-6 people, including the helper in the pickup van, drowned in the pond. Later, local people rescued 5 people, but a 15-16-year-old teenager died on the spot. The name of the deceased teenager is not known. However, the teenager is the brother-in-law of the car’s helper and driver Monir Hossain. His home is in Tuguria of the neighboring Nangalkot upazila, according to local people. The other 4 injured have been admitted to a hospital in Laksam.
Meanwhile, upon receiving the news, members of the Laksam Fire Service and Civil Defense arrived at the scene and searched for a long time to see if there were any more casualties in the pond.
However, no more casualties were found. Laksam Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Leader (Rescue Worker) Md. Anwar Hossain said that upon receiving the news, the Fire Service and Civil Defense rescue workers went to the scene and searched for a long time but did not find any casualties. He said that before the Fire Service and Civil Defense rescue workers left, the locals rescued the casualties and sent them to the hospital.
In this regard, at 7:45 pm, Laksam Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazneen Sultana said on the phone that no one had informed the police about this accident. However, she will look into the matter.
