SB-Sujon:
Moshiar Rahman (35), son of Taiyab Ali of Barabari village, Bhadai union, Aditmari upazila, Lalmonirhat. He was a motorcycle mechanic by profession. His family has kept him chained for a decade due to losing his mental balance. Moshiar’s father is old and cannot take any responsibility for his son. Therefore, his elder brother Mizanur Rahman has to bear the burden of his treatment. But Mizanur Rahman is a farmer by profession. He is doing his treatment by doing agricultural work. Therefore, he is not able to get his mentally unbalanced younger brother advanced treatment due to lack of money.
Meanwhile, Moshiar’s family claims that if he gets treatment, he can get his normal life back. Locals say that Moshiar is number 3 among the five siblings in their family. But Moshiar has lost his mental balance for the past decade. But his family and locals are upset with some of his unusual behaviors. His family members have chained him to his feet, unable to find a way out.
Since then, he has been living in a tin room at home. Although he has been enduring unbearable suffering due to the cold, he is not receiving any financial treatment. Moshiar’s elder brother Mizanur Rahman said that for 12 years, his walking has been abnormal and his madness has increased. So, having no other choice, we have chained him to it.
Moshiar’s elder brother also said that we have a house on a 400-square-meter plot as a source of support. Another brother of mine also lives on this 400-square-meter plot. He works as a farmer, and his elderly father also needs to be looked after. In this poor family, we cannot afford to give him better treatment. If he could have been sent to a mental hospital with government assistance, it would have been a great benefit to our family.
Upazila Social Service Officer Masud Rana said, I am not aware of the matter, but now I have heard that his family will contact him and action will be taken.
Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui said, “I came to know about this through you. However, if his family members come and contact us, we can try to send him to a mental institution through social services.”
