The previous Awami League government undertook important projects in the southern region, including the six-lane road project from Bhanga in Faridpur to Kuakata. After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, the government of Dr. Yunus took charge of the country. Dr. Yunus government after taking charge canceled various development projects including tax increase in the country. Various circles have started talking about such activities of the current government. The leaders and workers of Gana Odhikar Parishad organized a human chain and protest march in Barisal protesting against the cancellation of the road development project of Greater Southern Region. The party demanded to withdraw the order to cancel the project from the program on Sunday afternoon and to implement it. Otherwise, he warned of a drastic movement.
Mahanagar Gana Odhikar Parishad organized a human chain at the central Shaheed Minar premises on Sadar Road in the city at noon. After the human chain, the leaders and workers of the party took out a protest march. The protest procession circled the main thoroughfare of the city.
The leaders of the People’s Rights Council said that the people of the southern region have been deprived of development for ages. As this region is cut off from communication due to riverine, there has been no economic development including industrialization. With the opening of the Padma Bridge, the curse of being disconnected from the people of the region was lifted and road connectivity became important and the number of vehicles increased. But because the highway is not wide, accidents are happening constantly. Due to narrow highways the desired development did not accelerate. In this situation, the project of upgrading the highway from Bhanga to Kuakata to six lanes was taken up. They have come to know that the project has been canceled recently. If such development projects are cancelled, the misery of the people of the southern region will increase.
Barisal Metropolitan President of People’s Rights Council Golam Kibria presided over the human chain and protest rally. In the protest rally, the party’s general secretary Farhad Hossain Talukder along with various leaders addressed the human chain and the protest rally.
The speakers said to the current government, “If you play with the dreams of the people of the south, then I will be forced to launch a tough movement against you like the fascists.” They called upon the concerned persons of the present government including the Chief Advisor to take initiative for the implementation of this project immediately.
