Md. Faruk Ahmed Mollah Shariatpur :
Despite giving land in ‘Sheikh Hasina Tantapalli’ in Jajira, Shariatpur, the family of blind Siraj Madabar has not received a check for compensation for the acquired land. 8 visually impaired people from a family have been roaming from door to door for 4 years in the hope of compensation.
It is alleged that the helpless family has not received a check from the District Commissioner’s office even after going around for 4 years due to the complexity of the case due to the inability to pay the local broker. The treatment of 8 visually impaired people of the family has been suspended due to not receiving the check. Although they have applied to the District Commissioner for compensation for the land in this regard, no action has been taken. However, the District Commissioner has said that he will investigate the matter and provide assistance.
According to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the victim’s family and local sources, Siraj Madabar of Haji Gayzuddin Dhalikandi area of Naodoba Union of the upazila has been roaming with his wife in Amrakanan for the last 4 years with the files of land documents in his hand. The government acquired a total of 119.73 acres of land in Naodoba Mouza of Jajira Upazila of Shariatpur and Kutubpur Mouza of Shibchar Upazila of Madaripur for the ‘Sheikh Hasina Tantapalli’ construction project. Which was completed in LA case number 6 in 2018-2019. In that acquisition, 66.7 percent of the land in BRS 20, 29 Khatian number 2416, 2468 in Jajira 101 Naodoba Mouza came to Siraj Madabar’s family. In 2020-2021, a check of about 1 crore 16 lakh taka was completed from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office under miscase number 280 and was issued in the name of Siraj Madabar. But before that, Ibrahim Madabar, the father of local broker Elias Madabar, filed a civil case in 2014 in the Chikandi court of Shariatpur against 94 people. In that case, several people including locals Yarun Nesa, Yunus Bepari, Mujibar Madabar, Azid Madabar, Jalal Madabar, Harun Or Rashid, Faruk Hossain and others were able to cash the checks after paying the broker, but Siraj Madabar has not been able to collect the checks for the past four years despite staging a sit-in at the District Commissioner’s office. Siraj alleged that although his name is in the case, he has not been able to collect the checks because he has not been able to pay broker Elias Madabar Tk 1.4 million. Due to not receiving the checks, the eye treatment of Siraj Madabar, his wife Selina Begum, son Swadhin Madabar, Imamul Madabar, sister Sona Mala Begum, Jharna Akhter, Joybun Nesa and niece Ratna Akhter has been stalled.
The blind Siraj Madabar of Haji Gayazuddin Dhalikandi area said, “I have been going to various places including the District Commissioner’s office for the check for 4 years. But unfortunately, I am not getting the check. Local broker Ilias Madabar wants 1.4 million taka, and since I cannot pay, my check is stuck. If I do not get the check, it will not be possible to run the family including the treatment of 8 visually impaired people in the family.
In the same vein, local woman Yarun Nesa, who received the check in the land case, said, “I have received a check from the District Commissioner’s office after giving 200,000 taka to broker Ilias’ family. But since Siraj is unable to pay the broker, I am not getting the check.”
The accused broker Ilias Madabar of Naodoba in Jajira Upazila admitted the matter and said, “In 2014, we filed a civil case in the court against 94 people. Which is an injunction. But many people have withdrawn the land checks filed through fake documents. Since the case is ongoing, he claims that whoever gets the check once it is settled will take it.”
Bangladesh Human Rights Commission Shariatpur District Branch President Advocate Masudur Rahman said, I have learned that the land of a certain Siraj Madbar has been acquired by the ‘Sheikh Hasina Tantapalli’ project. After the acquisition, he has been protesting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office for the last 4 years, going to different people to get his check. But he is not getting the check. Which is a violation of human rights. I want everyone involved in this matter, including the Deputy Commissioner, to stand by this visually impaired person.
Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashraf Uddin said, clear evidence is needed, how did others get the check in the same case! It is not supposed to happen that others can collect the check just because the plaintiff has given clearance. Since 8 people in that family are visually impaired, the matter will be investigated and the family will be assisted.
