Former General Secretary of Bangla Bodybuilding Federation, Member of Wrestling Federation and former Mr. Bangladesh Nazrul Islam (70) is no more. He passed away at Azgar Ali Hospital in the capital on Wednesday morning (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Hi Rajiun). At the time of his death, he left behind his aged mother, wife and two sons. Or Johar Banshal Bara Jama Masjid after offering prayers, the deceased’s body was buried in Azimpur graveyard.
Former Mr. Banglashe Nazrul Islam was not feeling well for several days. The former General Secretary of the Bodybuilding Federation was admitted to the ICU of Azgar Ali Hospital in the capital for two days. But could not return home from hospital. Nurul Islam Naim, a former member of Bangladesh Bodybuilding Federation, confirmed the death of Nazrul Islam. Nazrul Islam was serving as the General Editor of Bangladesh Bodybuilding Federation for more than a century. He studied in Armanitola Government Pilot High School during his school life. After that he passed higher secondary from Dhaka College. Later, he was admitted to the Department of Zoology in Dhaka University. During his sports career, he practiced bodybuilding, wrestling and judo. He won silver again in the national wrestling competition. He got a brown belt in judo. He also won gold at the national level in the bodybuilding competition. He got the title of Mr. Bangladesh. He once became the associate sports editor of the student society of Fazlul Haque Hall, Dhaka University. Then, while serving as the sports editor, he established the FH Hall gym and organized bodybuilding competitions. He is the only bodybuilding judge in Bangladesh who has experience of being a judge in international bodybuilding competitions. A year ago, bodybuilding came under widespread discussion due to the bodybuilder’s kicking incident in the national competition. Questions were also raised about the bias of the federation’s results. Later, the National Sports Council formed an investigation committee and after the committee’s term expired, an ad hoc committee was formed. Nazrul Islam was not in that committee. Even though he was not on the committee, Nazrul used to think about bodybuilding. Nazrul’s departure will leave a void in Bangladesh’s bodybuilding. Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA), Bangladesh Gym Owners Association, Bodybuilding Federation, Wrestling Federation, Weightlifting Federation expressed grief over Nazrul Islam’s death.
