SM Suman Rashid, Amtali Correspondent: Like the rest of the country, the onset of winter in Amtali has also brought hardship to people’s lives even before the start of the month of Magh.
In Amtali Upazila, the search for work of working people has come to a standstill due to dense fog and severe cold since Wednesday morning. Due to the severe cold, working people, helpless, poor and job seekers, including people involved in various professions, have suffered. Working life has come to a standstill in the bitter winter weather. Due to the fog, buses and other vehicles are moving with their headlights on even during the day. Farmers are unable to dry paddy due to lack of sunshine. Hard-working people are not getting work even after going out in search of work. Shops are opening late. Working people and the homeless are suffering the most. They are unable to go out of their homes due to lack of winter clothes. Laborers and common people are in trouble due to the cold wind and bitter cold.
Long-distance driver Alamgir said, “I went out in the morning and now it’s 1 pm and I’m earning 90 taka. People are not going out due to the cold. That’s why work has decreased. Income is also decreasing.”
Nasir Uddin, a vegetable trader, said, “There are very few people in the market today. When the weather is good, there is a bit more trading.”
Daily wage worker Jahangir Gazi, there is no market at home. That’s why I went out. It’s very cold. I’m taking to the streets because of my stomach. Due to the severe cold, there is also a shortage of passengers. I don’t have as much income as before.
As winter approaches, diseases and pests are increasing. The number of patients suffering from colds, fever, cough, shortness of breath and diarrhea is increasing in hospitals.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Ashraful Alam said, the suffering of daily wage workers, uprooted and poor people has increased in winter. As a result, a section of the working people are overwhelmed during the severe cold. Therefore, wealthy people should help them this winter and distribute winter clothes. If we receive winter clothes from our Relief and Disaster Ministry, we will distribute them among the needy as much as possible.
