The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Dhaka-2 MP and food minister Kamrul Islam on charges of undeclared assets worth Tk 6.29 crore.
The case was filed at the ACC’s integrated district office on Monday (December 23). ACC Director General (Prevention) Md. Akhter Hossain informed the media about the case.
In addition, the ACC has asked Kamrul Islam’s wife Tayeba Islam, Dr. Tanjir Islam and daughter Segupta Islam to submit separate asset statements.
The statement in Kamrul’s case states that Tayeba Islam may have suspicious assets. Son Dr. Tanjir Islam has undeclared assets worth Tk 1 crore 46 lakh 15 thousand 795 and daughter Segupta Islam has tk 1 crore 10 lakh 48 thousand 925.
In addition, there is a possibility that they have more assets in their names and anonymously. On November 18, the Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Kamrul from Sector 12 of Uttara in the capital. On October 14, the ACC launched an investigation against him.
The case statement states that 6 crore 29 lakh 19 thousand 195 taka of known undeclared assets were found in the name of the accused Kamrul, which is a punishable offense under Section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
It also states that the alleged person was a public servant and while performing the duties assigned to him, he misused his power and acquired illegal assets disproportionate to his income, for which no acceptable explanation was found.
In addition, Md. Kamrul Islam made transactions of a total of 21 crore 18 lakh 15 thousand 465 taka in a total of 15 accounts operated in different banks in the name of himself and his organization. He transferred, converted, and transferred this money suspiciously. Which is a punishable offense under Sections 4 (2) and 4 (3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012.
This senior Awami League leader won all the national elections from 2008 to 2024. In 2008, he became the State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliament in the Awami League government and in 2014, he became the Minister of Food. His influence within the party increased further when he first became a member of the Awami League’s Central Executive Council and later a member of the Presidium.
After winning the 2014 election, he was accused of corruption in various matters, including appointments, transfers and food imports. In June 2015, Kamrul faced widespread criticism over the import of 200,000 tonnes of rotten wheat from Brazil worth Tk 4 billion.
