Aman Ullah:

120 maunds of fish were caught in a net by a fisherman on the coast of Shahparir Island, Teknaf. Fisherman Ershad Ullah Majhi said that the fish were caught in the sea adjacent to the West Para beach of Shahparir Island at around 9 pm on Wednesday, December 10.

This fisherman from Dangar Para village of Shahparir Island said that he went to the sea in the evening with a boat to catch fish. An hour after casting the net, a lot of fish were caught in the net. So, instead of lifting the net, he brought the fish along with the net to the beach.

After lifting the net on the beach, it was seen that a lot of small species of fish including small poya, faisya, mala, churi, bata were caught. The weight of which is about 120 maunds. He also said that the fish were sold to wholesale buyers for 3 lakh taka at the price of 2,500 taka per maund on the beach. Although wholesale buyers took some fish to the market, the rest was sent to the dry market.

Teknaf Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mohammad Delwar Hossain said that to increase the reproduction of marine fish and Hilsa in the Bay of Bengal, the government imposed a ban on fishing and marketing for 65 and 22 days from 2019. Due to this, the reproduction of various species of fish in the sea has increased many times. The quantity and size of the fish have also increased a lot. As a result, large quantities of fish of both large and small species are being caught in the nets of fishermen off the coast of Shahparir Island.

This fisheries officer also said that the fishermen are becoming financially self-sufficient with the money from selling these fish. The poverty and deprivation of the fishing villages is being eliminated. Of course, this is good news.
