Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Hossain:
Dr. Barkat (fictitious) has completed MBBS course. He studied various subjects according to the curriculum and learned to treat. With that knowledge he can give proper treatment of the disease. He feels the need to use his education and medical skills to provide proper medical care.
Medical education is a process in which students acquire knowledge such as medical science, diagnosis, treatment methods and disease prevention. But it is not limited to acquiring theoretical knowledge only. The nature of the medical profession is such that it is built on a combination of knowledge, skills and right attitude. These three elements are complementary to each other and form the basis of the physician’s overall competence.
Dr. Learning to treat blessings is knowledge, the ability to treat is skill and the feeling that proper treatment is needed is attitude.
Knowledge is of immense importance in medical education. It ensures a physician’s problem-solving ability and scientific decision-making ability.
Modern Medical Sciences: In-depth study of subjects related to biology, chemistry, physics and medicine.
Diagnostic Methods: Understanding and evaluating the signs and symptoms of various diseases.
Technology and Innovation: To be familiar with the latest advances in medical technology and research.
But simply collecting data is not enough. Physicians need to acquire the skills to apply this knowledge in practice.
Competency in medical education is the ability to perform clinical and surgical tasks. These skills are developed through training and experience.
Clinical Skills: Patient communication, history taking and physical examination.
Technical Skills: Ability to use various equipment, conduct and operate laboratory tests.
Problem Solving Skills: Making quick and accurate decisions using knowledge.
Hands-on training, clinical rotations and internships play an important role in the skill acquisition process.
Attitude: Commitment to profession
Attitude is an integral part of the medical profession. The right attitude of the physician ensures compassionate, ethical and responsible behavior towards patients.
Ethics: Keeping patient’s personal information confidential and providing proper treatment.
Empathy: Understanding the pain and suffering of the patient and treating them humanely.
Accountability: Being accountable for one’s work and continuously improving one’s skills.
Knowledge, skills and attitude—these three components are the main pillars of medical education. A doctor is successful only when he can work in harmony with these three aspects. Knowledge alone cannot be effectively applied in the absence of skills. It is difficult to gain the trust of the patient without having the skills but the right attitude. Even if the attitude is good, lack of knowledge or skills can lead to failure of treatment.
