Lalmonirhat 2 sentenced to death in controversial Deepali murder case

A court has sentenced two people to death in the much-discussed Deepali Dev Singh murder case in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat. Along with this, they have been fined Tk 20,000 each and sentenced to seven years in prison in default.

On Monday (October 28), Judge Adib Ali of the Senior District and Sessions Judge’s Court of Lalmonirhat gave the verdict in the presence of the accused.

The convicts are Osman Ali (52) of West Haldibari area of Patikapara union of Hatibandha upazila and Rabiul Islam (41), son of Mecher Ali of the same area.

The deceased housewife Deepali Dev Singh is the wife of Parimal Dev Singh of East Bezgram area of Tongbhanga union of Hatibandha upazila.

According to the case details, Dipali Dev Singha had an extramarital affair with a young man.

The young man lived in Sylhet. On July 9, 2020, when she went missing from her home to visit her boyfriend, her family filed a GD with Hatibandha Police Station on July 14.

The deceased Dipali Dev Singha sought help from Osman and Rabiul to visit her boyfriend in Sylhet. Dipali had 3.5 lakh taka with her. At that time, Osman and Rabiul dressed her in a burqa, took her to the Teesta char, killed her, buried her body in sand, and fled with the 3.5 lakh taka that Dipali had. 

Meanwhile, on July 18, the police recovered Dipali’s body from the Teesta river char in Khuniagach Anand Bazar area of Sadar Upazila. On the other hand, based on the GD, Hatibandha Police Station arrested four people including Osman and Rabiul and conducted preliminary interrogation. During the initial interrogation, they confessed to killing Dipali Dev Singha and taking the money. 

In the case of Deepali’s murder, Nirmal Dev Singh, the deceased’s brother-in-law, filed a murder case against six people at Hatibandha Police Station on July 22 of that year. The police submitted a charge sheet against six people in the case. 

The court delivered its verdict on Monday after a long hearing in the controversial murder case. Osman Ali and Rabiul Islam were sentenced to death and fined Tk 20,000 each, with seven years in prison in default. The remaining four accused were acquitted as the charges were not proven. 

Lalmonirhat Court Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Razzak confirmed the matter.
