A young man was killed by cutting Elopathari with a knife during an arbitration meeting over dues. Three more people were seriously injured. The incident took place in Nabipur market of Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla district on Thursday night.
Deceased Rajib Hossain (32) son of deceased Khalil Mia of Rahimpur village of upazila. The injured are Nabipur village fishmonger Mozaffar Hossain (50) and his son Akhter Hossain (30) and Jasim Uddin (55). The injured are undergoing treatment at Comilla Medical College Hospital. Locals arrested a person named Maruf (19) from the spot and handed him over to the police. The arrested is the son of Abul Kalam of Mochagra village of Jatrapur union of Maruf upazila.
Rabeya, the wife of the injured Akter, said that her aunt Nilufa Begum borrowed 10,000 taka from Shidina Begum of Jatrapur village in Upazila. Due to the non-payment of the loan, there was no settlement even though several arbitration meetings were held for this money. Shirin came to my father-in-law’s house with a gang of 8/10 men to pick up his Nanad and husband for the due money. They clashed with us. After that, the locals held an arbitration meeting in Nabipur Bazar Kamal Master’s office to settle the matter.
Eyewitnesses said that Maruf, Marfat and others who came with Shirina Begum kicked Rabeya Begum outside the office during the arbitration. When Rabeya’s husband’s friend Rajib went to pick up Rabeya, Maruf, Marfat, took out a knife from his waist and left Rajib with yellow wounds on his chest and body. While trying to save Rajib, his friend Akhtar Hossain and his father Mozaffar and uncle Jasim Uddin were cut and seriously injured. Meanwhile, the locals arrested one of the assailants named Maruf and rescued the injured and brought them to the Muradnagar Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty declared Rajib Hossain dead and sent the injured to Comilla Medical College Hospital for better treatment as the condition was critical.
In this regard, Muradnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubul Haque said that one person has been arrested in connection with the murder. The body was recovered and sent to Kumek Hospital morgue for autopsy. The murder case is pending.
