International Desk: Russian forces have taken full control of the strategically important mountain town of Buhledar in eastern Ukraine. Reports from pro-Russian military bloggers on Wednesday claimed that Russia had captured a key Ukrainian city in the Donetsk region. That is, the city has fallen in the hands of Russian forces.

Only a day ago, the governor of the Donetsk region said that Russian forces entered the center of the city of Vuledar. Meanwhile, Russia claimed full control of the city. Earlier in 2022, Russia annexed four regions of Ukraine, although not within its own territory.

Russian authorities have yet to comment on taking control of the city. The mountainous town of Vuledar has been resisting ever since Russia launched a surprise attack on Ukraine in 2022. But finally the city fell completely at the hands of the Russian forces.

As the city was located at the junction of the Eastern and Southern Fronts, it served as a supply center for both sides in the ongoing war. Taking control of the city is considered a major step for Moscow to include the entire Donetsk region.

When Ukrainian forces were in full control of Vuledar, they were able to use the city as a platform to attack Russian military supply lines in the region.

Russian forces reached the outskirts of the city last week and have intensified attacks there in the past few days. It has also deterred Ukrainian forces and complicated logistics and army positions.

Earlier last month, Russian forces liberated the Novorodivka area of Donetsk region. It is located about 20 kilometers (12 mi) from the city of Pokorovsk.

According to official statistics, the city had more than 14,000 residents before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In February 2022, Russia launched a surprise attack on Ukraine. Since then, the conflict continues.
