Adviser on Home Affairs Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has instructed the concerned to transform the police into a people-friendly force.
The advisor gave this instruction in the conference room of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters in Ramna of the capital this morning in an exchange meeting with the police officers of different levels of the DMP.
The advisor said, not only on paper, but through public service and work, the police should prove to be people-friendly in reality. For this, the first thing is to change their mindset. They have to work and work hard with enthusiasm and public service mentality. Through this it is possible to restore the glorious image of the police.
Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said that the police should work to ensure that common people get relief and innocent people are not victims of harassment. The advisor said, no one can be arrested without investigation. Law enforcement personnel cannot arrest anyone unless they identify themselves.
In the existing context, the police are not filing cases for the purpose of harassment, the advisor said, now those who are filing cases are the general public. Many people are filing lawsuits due to long-term grievances and deprivation, which will decrease a lot with time. He said that the people should be convinced to hand over the real criminals but not to harass innocent people unnecessarily.
Mentioning the need to increase public awareness about mob justice, the Home Affairs Adviser said that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. If someone does wrong, hand him over to the law, not otherwise.
