United States wants to know reform plan of interim government

Foreign Secretary M Jaseem Uddin said that the US delegation has expressed interest to know about the reform plan of the interim government. He said this after a meeting with the US delegation at Rashtriya Guest House Padma on Sunday (September 15) afternoon.

He said that a high-level delegation headed by US Treasury Assistant Undersecretary Brent Neyman is visiting Bangladesh. I had a meeting with them some time ago. Secretary of Economic Relations Department, Chairman of Revenue Board, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Ministry of Labor and Employment, Ministry of Home Affairs and representatives of Bangladesh Bank were present in the meeting. In the meeting, I talked about the issues related to the interests of the two countries. We informed the delegation about all the steps the government has already taken in the context of the revolutionary changes initiated in the new Bangladesh achieved through the great sacrifices of the students.

The secretary said that they reiterated the commitment of the United States government to work with the interim government. They expressed interest to know about the government’s reform plan. Considering the issue of economic reforms as a special priority of this government, the areas of possible cooperation of the United States regarding reforms in the financial and revenue sectors are to increase bilateral trade and investment. At the same time, we discussed various issues including labor environment, human rights protection, Rohingya humanitarian assistance.

He said that the annual cooperation agreement between the Department of Economic Relations and USAID was signed today.
