Since the construction of Sheikh Hasina bridge in Gangachra upazila of Rangpur on Teesta river, the people of Teesta have been making various complaints. After the inauguration, heavy vehicles were not allowed to cross the bridge for three and a half years. Later, when the bus-truck movement started again, the connection road became weak and started to break down at various places. Due to this, the students of the anti-discrimination student movement demanded not to drive heavy vehicles including stone-laden trucks until the road is renovated and constructed. Apart from this, they raised 10 demands including giving maintenance responsibility to roads and public roads from LGED, police check post.
In view of this, on Wednesday (September 4) afternoon, when the anti-discrimination students went to build a barricade in Milon Bazar area of Kakina Union of the upazila, the anti-discrimination students were attacked by several people including an Awami League activist named Naya Mia. Munna, a student of Daffodil International University, was injured in their attack.
After receiving the information, Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Zahir Imam went to the spot with the army members and controlled the situation. At this time, the students were assured that the construction of barricades will be completed on Thursday and the movement of heavy vehicles will be stopped. After this assurance the students left the place.
Police and local residents said that the road was damaged in three months due to heavy traffic. Which costs about 3.5 million taka. Protested on Kakina-Mahipur road with 10 demands including action against the contractor. Later, on August 18, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer held an exchange meeting with Rangpur and Lalmonirhat LGD and road and township officials. There he proposed to give the responsibility of roads and public roads from LGED. Apart from this, they raised several demands including a police check post, preparations for revenue collection, and action against the contractor. Finally, on Wednesday, when the students went to build a barricade in Milon Bazar area of Kakina Mahipur Rangpur road, the local Awami League workers stopped them. There was a dispute between the two when they tried to build a barricade ignoring the obstacles. At one point, a local Awami League activist Naya Mia was pushed by several people and a student was injured.
Injured student Munna complained and said that we have raised several demands with the contractor. But today, when we went to help the administration in building the barricade, the Awami League workers got angry with us and came to beat us. Later I was injured in a stampede. I am currently healthy.
Kaliganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Zahir Imam also. According to the previous decision, it has been decided to stop all types of heavy vehicles including stone-laden trucks from September 1. That is why the barricade is being built. But there was some delay as the leaders of the Bus Owners Workers Association held periodic meetings at the Divisional Commissioner’s office. It has been decided to build barricades in public interest. which will be completed on Thursday. As the injured students were physically weaker than before, the illness increased to join the debate. However, the student went home with first aid.
