The water level in Gomti river in Comilla has increased due to heavy rain and torrential water. Already, about 4,000 hectares of cropland has been submerged in water. Since last night, rain and torrential water has been increasing continuously. The water of the river is below the danger level till this morning, but the local residents fear that it will soon overflow the banks.
Some residents of Gomtipar said that they have not seen so much water in the river in the last 10 years. Thousands of families in the Char region have taken shelter in the dam due to rising water.
Syed Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Comilla Meteorological Office, said that 79 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in the district from 12 noon on Tuesday to 12 noon on Wednesday. More rain is likely in the next 72 hours.
Meanwhile, at 10:30 this morning, Gomti river water is flowing 22 cm below the danger line, said Superintending Engineer of Comilla Water Development Board (PUBO). Abdul Latif. He said that the officials are inspecting the dangerous places.
This morning in Banashua, Palpara, Ratnavati, Tikkachar, Jaluapara, Burichong upazila of Banashua, Palpara, Ratnavati, Burichong upazila, Shimailkhara, Purbhura, Nanuar Bazar, Mithlapur, Gobindpur, Brahmanpara upazila Malapara area of Comilla Gomti river, waves are crashing near the banks of Gomti river. Thousands of acres of vegetable crops in Char area were submerged in water. Many residents left their homes and took temporary shelter in the dam.
Swapan Mia, a resident of Malapara area, said that he lives in Char with his family. Gomti has not seen so much water in last 10 years. His old mother, wife, children and two cows have taken refuge in Gomtir dam.
Meanwhile, Abul Kalam of Banti area of Burichong Upazila said that the radish of his 120th century land has been submerged in water. Nawab Miar of Kamarkhara area also lost crops. He said he cultivated beans and paddy. The beans were small. A young pumpkin was hanging in the loft. Everything is now under water. Rahim Mia, a farmer of Jaluapara area, said that he spent one lakh rupees and planted seedlings of shrimp, chichinga, bitter gourd and pumpkin. The vines will climb into the loft. At this time his saplings were drowned in the water of Gomti.
Hundreds of families were seen taking shelter in the city protection embankment in Tikkachar area. In some places, the water has turned like ice. Residents said that they could not take out many necessary things from the house due to sudden increase in water.
Azad Mia of Chanpur area said that he went out last night with his children’s books and his own clothes. Today, they are taking out the bed and cupboard from the wet house in the rain.
Comilla Adarsh Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Romen Sharma said that the three have been roaming around different points in Gomti since last night. Gomtir Dam has been damaged in various areas. Locals in those areas have been busy protecting the embankment with earth and sandbags.
Water continues to flow from India through the Kakari, Paguli and Salda rivers in addition to the Gomti for three consecutive days of rain. Concerned people are worried about flooding in Comilla.
Meanwhile, incessant rains have caused extensive damage to Gomti’s fodder crops in Comilla. Ayub Mahmud, Deputy Director of Comilla Agriculture Extension Department, said that there has been extensive damage to crops. The extent of damage cannot be assessed until the water recedes. He called an emergency meeting with the agriculture officials.
