Flash floods in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan Valley collapsed part of a bridge connecting Abu Arish and Sabia governorates to the city of Radis.
Yesterday (04/08/2024) due to this incident, two vehicles fell down the bridge, as a result of which one person died and 8 people were injured. Ambulance and rescue team rushed to the spot to provide necessary medical care to the injured.
The National Center for Transport Safety has confirmed that it is going to the scene to begin the investigation process necessary to uncover the circumstances and causes of the accident.
Witnesses said sand digging near the bridge’s foundation and the pressure of strong flood waters eroded the soil, causing part of the bridge to collapse. While two vehicles were hit by the landslide, the other vehicles managed to stop before reaching the affected area.
Authorities also responded to a number of incidents caused by flooding and rain, including the collapse of roofs on several commercial buildings in Saudi Arabia, inundation of homes, and vehicles getting stuck or stranded.
Special forces for road safety announced that vehicles in both directions have been diverted to alternative routes due to the damage to the Radis bridge. They urged the public to follow the instructions of the field team and follow traffic rules.
The Jizan Civil Defense Directorate highlighted the dangers of lightning and electrical shorts during rains, stressing the importance of observing all safety measures and avoiding going near the valley.
On the other hand, Jizan region and its governorates continued to receive rain for the second consecutive day, flooding central governorates and their villages with rainwater flowing westward towards the sea.
