Sunamganj residents are afraid of flood for the third time

Due to heavy rains and upstream flows, the water level of the river is rising again. On Friday morning, Surma River water was seen flowing above the danger level at Sunamganj point. In this, the roads in the low-lying areas of Sunamganj city have been submerged in water. The residents of Sunamganj are afraid of flooding for the third time this season.

In the last 24 hours, 260 mm of rain was recorded in Sunamganj and 310 mm in Cherrapunji, India. Due to such heavy rainfall in the upstream and district, the water level of Surma river is increasing gradually.

As the water rises, the Saktiyarkhala section of Tahirpur Sunamganj road is flooded for the third time this season. It has stopped direct traffic. Passengers have to cross this section by ferry boat. Water has also risen in the Anwarpur part of this road. However, as the current in the water is low in this part, passengers can cross on foot. Many are able to cross by driving CNG, motorcycles and autorickshaws.

Meanwhile, the direct road connection from Tahirpur to commercial area Badaghat has been cut off. Some parts of the road are knee-deep in water, causing suffering to the residents around this road.

Resident of Lakshmipur village of Tahirpur Sadar Union. Abu Taher said, this road is submerged in water every few days. We have difficulty moving. You have to go to Tahirpur Sadar Hospital through this road. In case of emergency, it is the duty to go without boat with hospital patients.

Pintu Das was riding a motorcycle from Sunamganj to Tahirpur. He works in a pharmaceutical company. In case of emergency, you have to go to Tahirpur. He said that there is water in the 200 meter part of the Shaktiarkhala road. I was able to cross in a few hours with a motorcycle. Water on Anwarpur road. We had to go to Tahirpur by treading water in these few places.

Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Howladar said, there is no fear of a third flood. Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in the next 24 hours. After that, there will be normal rainfall.”
