Sharafpur Union Parishad Chairman of Khulna Dumuria Upazila Sheikh Rabiul Islam Rabi is a member of District Awami League. Azgar Biswas aka Tara Biswas was arrested by the police. On Monday (July 08) at 12 noon, they arrested him from Biswas’ office in Rayermahal area of the city and took him away from the district DB police.
Two teams of district and metropolitan police led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dumuria police station Sukant Saha searched the office of Tara Biswas. However, OC Sukant Saha did not immediately agree to speak.
Earlier on Sunday night, Shayla Erin, the victim’s wife, filed a murder case at Dumuria police station.
It is to be noted that the miscreants shot and killed Sheikh Rabiul Islam, Chairman of Sharafpur Union of Dumuria Upazila of Khulna, at a place called Gutudia on Saturday night. After the extended meeting of Upazila Awami League that evening, Chairman Ravi was returning to his residence in Khulna metropolis on a motorcycle around 8:30 pm. When he reached Gutudia School on the Khulna-Satkhira highway, some miscreants shot at him.
7 UP Chairman killed in 45 years:
Seven UP chairmen have been gunned down in the last 45 years in Dumuria. Before Rabiul, Sheikh Kabirul Islam, Chairman of Dumuria Sadar UP was killed by terrorists in 2001. 23 years have passed since then. In 2004, Gutudia UP Chairman Khan Alamgir Hussain was shot dead by terrorists while visiting India.
According to police, Awami League leaders and local residents, the then chairman of Kharnia UP Sheikh Mokched Ali was first shot dead in Dumuria in 1979 after independence. After that, Sheikh Kamal Uddin of Sadar UP in 1986, Sheikh Abdul Majid of Sadar UP in 1989, Tojam Sardar of Rudaghora UP in 1999 were shot dead by terrorists. Kabirul’s father who died in 2001 was Kamal Uddin. Rabiul Islam was shot dead by terrorists. In this incident, a new fear has been created among the public representatives in the upazila.
Vice Chairman of Dumuria Upazila Parishad and convener of Upazila Jubo League, Gobind Ghosh said, after this incident, the upazila’s common people and public representatives are getting worried again. But we believe, if the administration and the people are aware, the terrorists will not be able to do any more harm to the public representatives.
Narayan Chandra Chand, Minister of Lands and Member of Parliament of Khulna-5 Constituency (Dumuria-Phultala) believes that by killing Rabiul, panic is being created among the public representatives. He told the media that Dumuria was once known as a town of terror. After the Awami League came to power in 2008, it was stopped due to the efforts of the administration and leaders. After 22-23 years, by killing a public representative again, the common people are being made to think again.
