Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 5th phase (Phase 2) land and house transfer program to 18,566 landless and homeless families at Lalmonirhat.
Honorable Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina MP has auspiciously inaugurated the program of 2 percent land recognition and house transfer to 1 thousand 6 landless and homeless families in Lalmonirhat district through video conferencing from the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganobhaban.
On Tuesday (June 11) at 10 a.m. at the Mahishamuri Shelter Project in Kaliganj Upazila of Lalmonirhat, Lalmonirhat district administration organized land and house transfer ceremony to landless and homeless families, Lalmonirhat District Administrator Mohammad Uliah, Jhalmuri seller Babu Mia, a beneficiary of the Mahishamuri Shelter Project, housewife Shaheran Bewa spoke.  Music was performed by Dulali Rani Roy.  Dances were performed by local dance artists.  At that time Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Zakir Hossain, Rangpur Division Deputy Inspector General of Police Md. Abdul Baten, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Lalmonirhat-2 Constituency Member of Parliament Md. Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Lalmonirhat-3 Constituency Member of Parliament Adv.  Md. Motiar Rahman, former Member of Parliament Adv.  Safura Begum Rumi, Lalmonirhat Zilla Parishad Chairman Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique and other persons were present.
Meanwhile, under the chairmanship of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Acting) ABM Ariful Haque, Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Education Officer Md. Abdul Hamid Sarkar, Mogulhat Union Parishad Chairman Md. Habibur Rahman Habib spoke at Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Parishad Auditorium.  Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Dipankar Roy and others.  At that time Lalmonirhat Local Government Department Deputy Director (Acting) Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Kamruzzaman Sujan, Vice Chairman Md. Ershadul Karim, Female Vice Chairman Latifa Begum Lucky, Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Project Implementation Officer Moshiur Rahman, Bangladesh Freedom Fighters Sangsad.  Former Upazila Unit Commander Abu Bakr Siddique and other persons were present.
 It is to be noted that in the fifth phase (2nd phase) in 5 upazilas of Lalmonirhat district, out of 1 thousand 6 houses, 17 in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, 142 in Aditmari upazila, 580 people in Kaliganj upazila, 126 in Hatibandha upazila, 141 in Patgram upazila were given 2 percent of land and houses.  And in 4 upazilas of Lalmonirhat district, 192 families were resettled in Aditmari upazila, 295 in Kaliganj upazila, 70 in Hatibandha upazila, 60 in Patgram upazila out of 617 dilapidated CIIT barracks.
To ensure housing for all, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over 18,566 more houses to the homeless and landless people across the country under the government’s housing program Asharyan-2.
Sheikh Hasina this morning joined through video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban and auspiciously inaugurated the house transfer program along with land ownership documents to the beneficiaries of Kaliganj upazila Mahishamuri shelter project in Lalmonirhat, Eidgaon in Cox’s Bazar and Charfashion upazila in Bhola.
Besides handing over houses to 18 thousand 566 homeless and landless families in the second phase of the fifth phase of the Asharyan-2 project, he also declared 70 more upazilas landless and homeless free, including all the upazilas of 26 districts.
The Chief Minister handed over 1,282 houses in Lalmonirhat, 261 in Cox’s Bazar and 1,234 in Bhola.
With new landless and homeless free districts and upazilas, the total number of districts across the country stands at 58 and upazilas at 464.
Earlier, the Prime Minister distributed 63 thousand 999 houses in the first phase of Asharyan-2 project, 53 thousand 330 in the second phase, 59 thousand 133 in the third phase and 39 thousand 365 in the fourth phase.
Under the scheme, each landless and homeless family is given a semi-furnished house with 2.5 percent land ownership, which will be owned by both husband and wife.  Each house has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a toilet and a balcony.
According to the project details, a total of 2 lakh 66 thousand 12 landless and homeless families have been rehabilitated in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth phases of the Asharyan-II project.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman launched the homeless rehabilitation program in 1972.
Following in the footsteps of Bangabandhu, his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took the initiative to give ownership of houses and land to the homeless and landless through the Asryan scheme in 1997.
A total of 7 lakh 71 thousand 301 families have been resettled since 1997 under Asharyan scheme.  The number of resettled people is 38 lakh 56 thousand 505 people (five people in a family).
Under the project, so far 8 lakh 67 thousand 904 landless and homeless families around 43 lakh 40 thousand people have been rehabilitated under shelter and other programs.  Only 29 lakh 10 thousand 265 out of 5 lakh 82 thousand 53 landless and homeless families have been rehabilitated under the Asryan scheme.

Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Md Tofazzal Hossain Mia presided over the ceremony. Later, the Prime Minister interacted with the beneficiaries.
