First day of year begins with smell of new books

On the first day of the year, the book festival has started simultaneously in all educational institutions across the country. The festival officially started on Monday (January 1) from 10 am. Primary and VI-VI students get all the books on the first day. However, eighth-ninth students have to return with partial books.

At around 10:30 a.m. on this day, the central program of the elementary level book festival began at the National Government Primary School ground in Mirpur of the capital. In the beginning new books were handed over to the students. Meanwhile, the students simultaneously raised the new book and expressed their excitement.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain participated as the chief guest in the event. Ministry Secretary Farid Ahmed was the special guest. The program was presided over by Director General of Primary Education Directorate Shah Rezwan Hayat.

There, Sejuti Shiuli, a class III student, said that she got up very early in the morning to come to get books. Came with mother and got the book. When you go home, you will first read the stories in Bengali books.

Second class Nabil Hossain put the new book in his mother’s bag. The comment of the young student who is self-conscious about happiness, if kept outside, the book will become dirty. They (classmates) are keeping out, their books will be out of date first.

Meanwhile, although there is no central organization of secondary schools, book festivals have been organized in all educational institutions across the country. Books are being distributed in various educational institutions in a festive atmosphere. Book distribution activities will continue till afternoon. The Ministry of Education said that all students will return with their books.

The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) said that they have delivered 100% books from pre-primary to seventh class to the upazila. The upazila education office is coordinating and distributing the books according to the needs of the educational institutions. But 20-25 percent of the books of eighth-ninth are still not printed. They will be printed and delivered to the students this month.

According to NCTB data, the number of students in 2024 academic year is estimated at 3 crore 81 lakh 27 thousand 630 people. A total of 30 crore 70 lakh 83 thousand 517 books have been printed for them. 5 crore 38 lakh 3 thousand 423 copies of books have been printed for first, fourth and fifth class students.

The number of second and third class books is 3 crore 36 lakh 1 thousand 274. 61 lakh 93 thousand 878 copies of books have been printed for pre-primary. 6 crore 45 lakh 48 thousand 308 copies are being printed for the sixth class, 4 crore 45 lakh 57 thousand copies for the seventh class, 5 crore 34 lakh 84 thousand 271 copies for the eighth class and 5 crore six lakh 84 thousand 573 copies for the ninth class.

On the other hand, a total of two lakh five thousand 31 books have been printed for the children of small ethnic groups (written in five languages). Among other books there are 5 thousand 752 copies of ‘Braille’ books. Moreover, teachers are being given 40 lakh 96 thousand 628 ‘Shikshak Sahayika’.

Meanwhile, out of 9 classes, 7 classes are now being given books written in the new curriculum. They are – first, second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth. The manuscripts of these books are newly written. Only students of class IV and V will get books of previous curriculum.
