It is reported that 51 percent of women in Bangladesh are married before the age of 18. This information was presented in a press conference organized by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad in Brahmanbaria on Sunday afternoon. According to the report of World Population Situation 2023, this was reported by quoting information from 2006 to 2023.

In the press conference, it was informed that despite various public and private initiatives, Bangladesh’s position in child marriage is still the first in Asia. Child marriage is a terrible social condition. Child marriage makes it difficult to curb school dropout rates. Mahila Parishad Brahmanbaria president Shobha Pal, general secretary Sathi Chowdhury, organizing secretary Shamima Sikder Dina were present in the press conference. Shamima Sikder Dina read the short written statement and answered the questions of the journalists.

The report provided by Mahila Parishad in the press conference mentioned that information on women abuse was collected from 12 newspapers including Dainik Kaler Kantha, Dainik Prothom Alo, Dainik Samakal in 10 months from January to October this year. According to these data, 397 people were raped during that time. 115 people were victims of gang rape. 31 people were killed after rape. Besides, 12 people have been victims of fatwa. Six people were victims of police torture.

In the press conference, the program of the district on the occasion of International Women’s Violence Prevention and World Human Rights Day was informed. These programs include postering and distribution of leaflets, interaction with beneficiaries on prevention and remedy of violence against women and girls, rallies and discussion meetings.
