About 15,000 people of four villages have suffered due to the lack of a bridge called Sagarghat on the river Sati in Chandanpat village of Kamalbari union of Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat. As there is no alternative system, the locals have built a shelter there but that too is dilapidated. As a result, the locals are moving on Sanko with risk.
The affected local residents said that this Sati River has divided Chandanpat village of the union. Across the river are Chandanpat Government Primary School and Pabnadali Government Primary School, Taskiyatul Uloom Madrasa. During the dry season, if the water level decreases, even if the river can be crossed, suffering is caused.
Students and common people have to suffer while taking patients to hospitals, harvesting paddy from land and going to madrasas, schools, colleges. As there is no bridge, one has to travel 4 kilometers to Aditmari upazila.
Victim Abul Kashem said, I have been seeing the suffering of the people of this village since I was born, the people’s representatives repeatedly assured but there was no bridge.
A teacher of Taskiyatul Ummul Madrasa and Orphanage said that students attend class during the dry season but do not come to class on time due to fear of crossing the bamboo fence during monsoon. Most of the students are absent.
Former leader of Lalmonirhat Government College Branch Chhatra League Aminul Islam, a local resident, said that Mojibur Rahman, the former Jatiya Party MP of this constituency, promised the bridge several times, but the bridge did not materialise. After that Social Welfare Minister Member of Parliament Nuruzzaman Ahmed promised several times. He himself came and said that bridge and road work will start. His term of about 14 years is the last stage. However, the bridge did not meet. Ever since birth, I have seen that the bridge has not been built even though the engineers have measured it.
In this regard, Aditmari Upazila Engineer Maidul Islam said that the soil of Sagarghat Bridge has been tested. Further activities are ongoing.
