In order to increase the production, hilsa harvesting, transportation, buying and selling, storage and exchange will be prohibited throughout the country for 22 days from October 12 to November 2 to give the mother hilsa an opportunity to release eggs during the breeding season. This information has been given in the notification of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. Earlier, a meeting of the National Task Force Committee on Hilsa Resource Development was held at the Directorate of Fisheries under the chairmanship of the minister. In the meeting, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sh M Rezaul Karim said that the extraction of hilsa will be prohibited throughout the country from October 12 to November 2 for the purpose of safe breeding of hilsa during the main breeding season. At the same time mother hilsa conservation campaign will be implemented. The government will provide VGF food support to fishermen during the ban on hilsa extraction. The minister said, Hilsa is not only our national resource, it is a GI certified resource that carries our unique identity in the world.
