Appellate Division Justice Obaidul Hasan took oath as the 24th Chief Justice of the country. President Md. Sahabuddin read the oath to the Chief Justice.

Appellate Division Justice Obaidul Hasan was appointed as the 24th Chief Justice of the country.According to the order of the President, the Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. This information was given on September 12 in a notification signed by Golam Sarwar.

It says, “By virtue of Article 95(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, His Excellency the President has appointed Justice Obaidul Hasan of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.”

According to the notification,Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui will be out of the country from Monday 11 to 18 September. Senior Justice Obaidul Hasan of the Appellate Division will serve as Acting Chief Justice during this period.

Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui retired on September 25. But as the Supreme Court was on vacation at that time, August 31 was the last working day of his judicial career.

Hasan Faiz Siddiqui was sworn in as Chief Justice on 31 December 2021. He performed judicial duties for 20 consecutive months. He turned 67 on September 25. So according to the constitution, he retired today.

Justice Obaidul Hasan was born on January 11, 1959 in a Muslim family in Mohanganj of Netrakona district. His father Dr. Md. Akhlakul Hossain Ahmed was one of the organizers of the liberation war.

Justice Obaidul Hasan obtained his BSS, MSS and LLB degrees from Dhaka University and was admitted to the District Bar in 1986. In 1988, he was enrolled as a lawyer in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and in 2005 as a lawyer in the Appellate Division.

He served as Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General for five years from 1996-2001. Joined High Court Division as Additional Judge on June 30, 2009. Then on June 6, 2011, he was appointed as a permanent judge in the same department.

Joined on March 25, 2012 as a member of the International Criminal Tribunal-II formed to prosecute those involved in crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War. After that, he was appointed as the chairman of this tribunal on December 13 of that year and worked till September 15, 2015. During his tenure at International Criminal Tribunal-II, 11 cases were adjudicated. He was appointed as a judge in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on September 3, 2020.

Justice Obaidul Hasan participated in an international conference held in Hong Kong in 1991. In August 2015, attended a law conference in Singapore and led the delegation of Bangladesh to a conference on international crime in Argentina. Also, at the end of August 2015, he attended an exchange meeting with the judges of the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal, the then Yugoslavia, in The Hague, Netherlands.
