The court rejected the bail application of Amanullah Aman, the advisor of the BNP Chairperson and the convenor of the party’s Dhaka Metropolitan North, who was convicted in a corruption case, and ordered him to be sent to prison.
On Sunday (September 10), he surrendered and applied for bail in the court of Judge Abul Kashem of Dhaka Special Judge Court-1 on the orders of the High Court. After the hearing, the judge rejected his bail application and sent him to prison.
Earlier on September 3, Aman’s wife Sabera Aman surrendered to the court and applied for bail. The court rejected the bail application and ordered to send him to jail. Then on September 5, the Supreme Court’s Chamber Judge Court granted his bail. At the same time, the court fixed January 15 for the full and regular bench hearing of the Appellate Division.
Earlier, on August 7, Justice Md. The 281-page published judgment was delivered by a High Court bench of Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat. According to the judgment, the Aman couple will have to surrender to the judicial (lower) court within 15 days of receiving the copy of the judgment.
Earlier, on May 30, the same bench of the High Court upheld the 13-year prison sentence of Aman and his wife Sabera Aman’s 3-year sentence in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case. The High Court upheld the 9-year prison sentence of BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tukur in another ACC case that day.
On March 6, 2007, the ACC filed a case against the Aman couple at the capital’s Kafrul police station on charges of concealing wealth information and acquiring wealth beyond known income. Aman was sentenced to 13 years in prison and Sabera to three years in the judgment of the special judge’s court on June 21 of that year. The couple later appealed the verdict to the High Court.
On August 16, 2010, the High Court granted the appeal and acquitted them. On May 26, 2014, when the ACC appealed against the judgment of the High Court, the Appellate Division overruled the judgment of the High Court and ordered a re-hearing of the case. Following this, the re-hearing ended on May 14. Later on May 30, the High Court gave this verdict.
On the other hand, ACC Deputy Director Shahriar Chowdhury filed a case against former State Minister for Power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku in Mohammadpur police station in March 2007 for concealing the account and source of income of Tk 4 crore 96 lakh 11 thousand 916. Commission’s Deputy Director SMM Akhtar Hamid Bhuya submitted the charge sheet in this case in the Metropolitan Magistrate Court on June 28 of that year.
On November 15, 2007, the trial court sentenced Tuku to 9 years in prison in this case. When Tuku appealed against that verdict, the High Court acquitted him on June 15, 2011.
Later, when the ACC appealed against the judgment of the High Court, on January 21, 2014, the Appellate Division canceled the acquittal and ordered a rehearing of the case. After re-hearing, the court upheld Tuku’s sentence on May 30. Later, when Tuku applied for a review of the judgment of the Appellate Division, it was rejected in the Supreme Court.
