On Wednesday afternoon, at around 4:30 pm, 910 small and large fish were caught from a trawler named FB Gafur at the Shah Parir Dwip Jetty Ghat in Teknaf Upazila. The fish were caught in a trawler owned by Abdul Gafur Alam of the Dale Para area of Shah Parir Dwip. Mohammad, the trawler’s boatman, said, “I went fishing in the sea off the coast of St. Martin on Tuesday afternoon with 9 boatmen. I cast the net at night and when I lifted the net in the morning, I saw that a lot of fish had been caught. I never imagined that so many fish would be caught in 7/8 hours. And without casting the net, I took the fish and went to the ghat. Tourists and locals gather at the jetty to see the fish.
The fishing family is now in a happy mood. Trawler owner Gafur Alam said that out of the 910 fish caught in the net, each small fish weighs 1.5 kg to 2 kg. In addition, there are 50 fish weighing 6.5 kg to 8 kg. The total weight of the fish is 1,650 kg. Trawler owner Gafur Alam sold the fish for 4 lakh 90 thousand taka.
Fish trader Syed Alam said that the tourist season is currently underway. Tourists from different parts of the country are coming to visit Cox’s Bazar. There is a huge demand for these fish in hotels and restaurants. The fish have been packed with ice and sent to Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong for sale.
Teknaf Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mohammad Delwar Hossain said, I have heard news of catching crushed fish on Shah Parir Island. The fish roam in areas where there are corals in the sea. This fish is very delicious among marine fish.
He further said that the government has imposed a ban on fishing and marketing since 2019 (65 days) to increase the reproduction of marine fish and hilsa in the Bay of Bengal. Due to the ban on fishing, the reproduction and size of various species of fish have increased many times. As a result, fishermen off the coast of Shahparir Island are catching a large number of fish of both large and small species in their nets, he said.
