Students from seven colleges are heading towards the Dhaka University campus with a procession from Science Lab to surround the residence of Dhaka University (DU) Pro-VC (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed. They started their procession from Science Lab towards Dhaka University campus via Dhaka College at around 10:30 pm on Sunday. As of last news, a large number of students are heading towards Dhaka University.
Students alleged that on Sunday morning, when they went to discuss five demands, including reducing the number of admission seats in seven colleges, DU’s Pro-VC (Education) and some teachers immediately insulted and expelled more than fifty students from seven colleges. In protest, students blocked the Science Lab intersection and the Technical intersection from 5 pm to 10 pm.
Afzal Hossain, a student of Dhaka College, said, “When we went to the Pro-VC of Dhaka University with our five-point demands, they insulted us and threw us out. Now, all our demands, including an apology from the students, must be accepted by night. If not, we will not leave the streets.”
The students’ demands are to abolish the unreasonable quota system in the admission tests of seven colleges from the 2024-25 session; not to admit students beyond the capacity of the classrooms; to admit students by considering the teacher-student ratio; to add negative marks to the admission tests; and to deposit the admission fee money in a new account other than DU in coordination with the expert committee formed by the ministry to ensure transparency in the admission fees of the seven colleges.
