6 people sentenced to death in Comilla murder case; 10 people sentenced to life

6 people sentenced to death for premeditated murder of Matbar Haji Nurul Haque in Brahmanpara, Comilla; Along with that, a fine of 50 thousand rupees and 10 others including accused Md. Nannu Mia were sentenced to life imprisonment; Along with that, the court of Comilla sentenced each of them to a fine of 50 thousand taka, in default of payment, another 6 (six) months imprisonment.
Judge Jahangir Hossain of the learned Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Comilla gave the verdict at 12 noon on Wednesday (June 26).
The accused who have been sentenced to death are – Md Machum (35), son of deceased Aziz, Tajul Islam (32), son of late A Latif, Md Mostafa (24), son of Abdul Kashem, Md Qayyum, son of Dr. Manu Mia, of Chhota Dhushia village of Comilla Brahmin Para upazila. (25), Abdul Chattar’s son Md. Qayyum (28), deceased Abdul Malek’s son Md. Tabdul Hossain (40).
The accused who received life imprisonment are – Md. Nannu Mia (40), son of deceased Wab Ali, son of deceased Ali Mia, Ah Matin Mia (40), deceased Ah Khalek Saidul Islam (24), son of Siddiqur Rahman, Babul Mia of Chhota Dhushia village of Comilla Brahmin Para upazila. (25), son of deceased Ah Latif, Safiqul Islam (35), son of deceased Naib Ali, Md Moslem Mia (45), son of Nannu Mia, Md Safiqul Islam (28), son of deceased Ah Baten, Md Helal Mia (25), Saru Mia. Billal Hossain (30), son of Md. Awal Mia (30) and son of late A. Matin Mia.
According to the details of the case, an arbitration meeting was held in a long-standing dispute over the land and property of the accused Machum Miar, along with the local Farid Miar. The victim Haji Nurul Haque gave judgment against the accused Md Machum Mia in the arbitration. The accused became enraged by this on February 16, 2011, when the victim was on his way home from Comilla on the way to the south side of Chota Dhushia Tabdul Mia’s residence, they attacked the victim Md. Nurul Haque in a pre-planned manner and cut him with a sharp weapon and inflicted bloody wounds. Nurul Haque died on the spot. In this incident, the next day, Md. Shariful Islam (24) of Chhota Dhushia village of Comilla Brahmin Para upazila, son of the victim, Md. Shariful Islam (24) of Chhota Dhusia village of Comilla Brahmin Para upazila, named 22 people including the accused Md. Machum Mia, son of deceased Aziz of the same village, and named 10/12 other unknown persons as accused. Officer Md Iktar Mia arrested the accused using information technology and handed them over to the court. Later, investigating officer SI Iktar Miah and ASP Ittut Miss revealed the main mystery of the incident and filed two separate charge sheets in the learned court mentioning the names of 20 people including the accused Md Machum Miah. Later, when the case came to trial on January 4, 2016, in order to form charges against all the defendants in the relevant section, after taking the testimony of 9 witnesses for the state, after the arguments, the charges brought against the defendants were proven beyond doubt, and 6 persons including the defendant Md Machum Mia were sentenced to death; Along with that, they were fined 50,000 taka each and 10 others including accused Md. Nannu Mia were sentenced to life imprisonment; Along with that, the court awarded a fine of 50 thousand taka to each, and another 6 (six) months imprisonment in default of payment. Also, the accused Md. Monirul Islam and Hiran Mia were acquitted as the charges against them were not proven and the accused Md. Phul Mia and Md. Salim Ray died before they were acquitted.
The accused Md. Qayyum, Md. Tabdul Hossain, Nannu Miah, Matin Miah, Babul Miah, Safiqul Islam, Muslim Miah, Safiqul Islam, Md. Helal Miah and Md. Awal were present in the court while the verdict was announced. The rest of the accused are absconding.
Expressing his satisfaction with this verdict, APP advocate Md. Zakir Hossain, appointed by the state, said that we hope the high court will uphold the verdict and implement it quickly.
Advocate Abdul Momin Ferdous handled the case for the accused.
