544 more olive ridley turtles released into St. Martin’s Sea

Another 544 olive ridley turtles born at the Marine Park Hatchery on St. Martin’s Island have been released into the Bay of Bengal. The turtles were released at Dimas Paradise Point on the north beach of St. Martin’s Island last Saturday afternoon. Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehsan Uddin confirmed this information. Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Md. Zia Uddin, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salah Uddin, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Al-Maruf, Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Arif Ullah Nezami, Coordinator of a social organization called ‘Amar Saint Martin’ Ali Haider, Ayatullah Khomeini, UNDP official Mohammad Kamal Uddin and others were present at the time of releasing these turtles into the sea.

UNDP official Mohammad Kamal Uddin said that UNDP and the Department of Environment have been releasing turtles hatched at the Marine Park Hatchery in the sea for two years in collaboration with the voluntary organization ‘Amar Saint Martin’. In continuation of this, 3,184 eggs of 26 mother turtles were collected and preserved by 2 egg collectors from November 1, 2024 to March 3 of this year. As of Saturday, 1,246 turtle hatchlings hatched from these eggs have been released into the sea in several stages. Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Md. Zia Uddin said that work is underway to make St. Martin’s a safe breeding and habitat for all marine animals, including turtles. It is important to protect biodiversity to keep the earth habitable for humans. As part of that, hatchlings from turtle eggs are being released into the sea.
