At least 40 people were injured in a clash between two parties over the distribution of Shirni in Thakurbhog village of Shantiganj upazila of Sunamganj. The incident took place at 10 am on Saturday.
The village is divided into two parts led by Abdal Mia and Sufi Mia, supporters of Awami League MA Mannan, and Awami League leader Nur Mia and BNP leader Ashiq Mia. They have been fighting for dominance for a long time. On Friday, Nur Mia and Ashiq Mia’s group organized Shirni. Abdal Mia and Sufi Mia’s side did not go there.
They organized Shirni by announcing it on the microphone at the same place on Saturday. Tension spread between the two parties over this. At one stage, they got involved in a clash.
40 people from both sides were injured during this.
Officer-in-charge of Shantiganj Police Station Akram Ali said at noon that police were deployed at the spot after receiving information. One person has been arrested. The situation is now under control of the police.
