4 days remand granted to two policemen accused in Saeed murder case in Rangpur

The court granted four-day remand to two policemen accused of shooting dead Abu Saeed, a student and one of the coordinators of Begum Rokeya University (Berobi) in Rangpur during the anti-discrimination student movement.

On Tuesday (September 10) at 9:30 am, the accused Rangpur Metropolitan Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain and Sujan Chandra Roy were taken to the Rangpur Metropolitan Amli Court. At that time, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) applied for their five-day remand. Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Second Court Judge Md. Asaduzzaman granted a four-day remand after the arguments of the lawyers. Later they were taken away from the court by the PBI under tight security of the police and army.

Earlier on Monday, they were handed over to PBI after their arrest on the requisition of the investigating officer of the case. The two accused were brought to the court today at 9 am under strict security of the police and the army. On August 3, the Metropolitan Police Headquarters found evidence of unprofessional behavior of the two policemen and dismissed them.

Shamim Al Mamun, the lawyer for the plaintiff, said that the court judge had seen the video of the direct involvement of the accused Amir Hossain and Sujan Chandra in the murder and heard their statements. They told the court that the killing was done on the orders of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Assistant Police Commissioner Md Arifuzzaman, Assistant Police Commissioner Imran Hossain and former OC of Tajhat Police Station Rabiul Islam. He also spoke about some higher authorities.

The court granted a four-day remand to find out who these higher authorities are, who planned the Abu Saeed murder, who tried to influence the case in different sectors to cover up the murder. Along with this, His Highness has also given instructions to follow the instructions of the High Court.

It is to be noted that in the afternoon of July 16, the students clashed with the police in front of Gate No. 1 of Berobi during the quota reform movement. At that time, Abu Saeed, a student of the English department of the university, was killed by the police. Abu Saeed’s elder brother Ramzan Ali filed a case in the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Tajhat Amli Court on August 18 in the name of 16 people including police officers, university administration, teachers and 30 to 35 unknown people.
