Bangladesh Bank new Governor is Abdur Rauf Talukder


Online Desk: Dhaka: Abdur Rauf Talukder has been appointed as the new Governor of Bangladesh Bank. Incumbent Governor Fazle Kabir will take over on July 3 after his term expires. On Saturday (June 11), a public holiday, the Finance Ministry’s Financial Institutions Department issued a circular appointing him for four years. He has been asked to join on July 4. He has been appointed as the Governor of Bangladesh Bank for a period of four years from the date of his joining on July 4, on condition that he retires from government service and relinquishes his relationship with all other organizations. It has also been said that Abdur Rauf Talukder will get salary-allowance and other benefits from Bangladesh Bank as per the terms of the agreement executed with the government during his tenure as Governor. Abdur Rauf Talukder joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in February 1988 (BCS 1985 batch). He has held various government posts in his long and colorful career. However, due to his specialization in public finance and financial management, he has spent most of his career in the Finance Department of the Ministry of Finance. Abdur Rauf Talukder has been working in the finance department for more than 18 years before taking charge as the finance secretary on 17 July 2016. In addition to his long career, he has served in the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Food and Ministry of Information. He also served as the First Secretary (Commercial) at the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. Rauf Talukder has been successfully serving as Finance Secretary for almost four years as Senior Secretary. He has played a leading role in various reform processes of the Ministry of Finance. In particular, he was instrumental in budget reforms, macroeconomic management, the provision of pensions to retired government employees through EFTs, and the automation of savings certificates. Abdur Rauf Talukder received the ‘National Integrity Award’ in 2021. Meanwhile, former finance secretary Fazle Kabir was appointed governor for four years in 2016. His term as governor was supposed to end on 19 March 2020, but 34 days earlier, on February 16, 2020, the government extended his term for three months and 13 days. The government then said he would remain governor until he turned 65. Prior to that, the term of office was extended for another two years.
