Lutheran health care workers strike in Dumki

Patuakhali Correspondent: Third and fourth class employees have started a sit-in strike in Dumki, Patuakhali demanding removal of corrupt officials including the board chairman of Lutheran Health Care Bangladesh (LHCB), a private mother and child health care center run by foreign donors. More than 50 employees (10:05 a.m.) went on strike at the main entrance of Lutheran Hospital at 10 a.m. on Thursday (May 26). The disgruntled employees claim that the NGO bureau is embezzling millions of rupees by keeping secret the salary structure of the NGO bureau and some corrupt officials including the board chairman by paying their salaries (half-salary). Although several investigations by the local administration and the district administration have revealed various irregularities including embezzlement of money against the senior officials including the managing director of the company, they are still mysteriously in force. They have started continuous strikes and sit-ins demanding 15 points including immediate removal of these corrupt officials. Earlier, the agitated employees handed over a memorandum with 15 demands to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer. The agitating LHCB’s Farmers Field School teacher Md. Jasim Uddin said, “Our movement will continue till the removal of corrupt officials, return of half a crore rupees embezzled from various projects as the core of the organization and exemplary punishment of those involved is ensured.” Pathologist Md. Zakir Hossain, Field Supervisor Mosharraf Hossain, Guard Abdul Motaleb, Aya Nazma and others declared to be adamant in their similar demands. Interim board chairman said in the face of cannons.
