‘Those responsible for climate change should contribute most’


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today asked the developed countries and development partners to come forward further to help the climate change vulnerable countries.

“We undertake various programmes regarding the climate change issue, we receive a numbers of pledges, but no-one fulfils those pledges,” she said.The prime minister said this while inaugurating the two-day Bangladesh Development Forum 2020 at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Finance has organised Bangladesh Development Forum which is a high-level multi-stakeholder participatory forum, providing a platform for effective dialogue among development partners, national and international NGOs, development think tanks and practitioners, and leaders from the business community.The prime minister said that as the developed countries and the development partners are not fulfilling their pledges properly, Bangladesh government has formed a trust fund in this regard to face the challenges of climate change. “We have formed the fund with our own money. We receive very little money as assistance,” she said.“More assistance is needed. [Not only] Bangladesh, [but also] the small islands and other countries which will be affected due to climate change will need this assistance,” she said. She also said that Bangladesh is not responsible at all for climate change, but the country is going to be affected. “Those who are mainly responsible for climate change should contribute the most,” she said. The prime minister said that the government has formulated the Delta Plan 2100 to save Bangladesh from the effects of climate change and has started to implement it. She also said that development partners, who are rather setting too many conditions, should come forward to help in those areas where Bangladesh has started moving forward. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Senior Vice President of JICA Dr Junichi Yamada, World Bank’s Vice President for the South Asia Region Hartwig Schafer, Vice-President (Operations 1) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Shixin Chen, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh Mia Seppo and Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Monowar Ahmed also spoke at the programme.
