Sirajganj cattle markets gaining momentum

Staff reporter:

Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the festival of sacrifice, country’s cattle markets have started drawing huge crowds. Sirajganj is no different as a great number of buyers and sellers are gathering to trade sacrificial animals.

As well as the district’s biggest cattle market Kalia-Kandarpar, a big number of cattle are being brought to different markets also including Talgachi, Sohagpur, Solonga, Pangasi, Ratankandi, Nolka, Bahuli and many others.
According to district livestock department, more than 3.5 lakh cattle have been prepared for sacrifice in the district this year. If farmers get fair price, they will be inspired to nurture more animals. Government took enough steps to tackle illegal cattle import from India.
Farmers are looking happy as they can sell cattle at better price in comparison with the previous years’ Eid-ul-Azha. Cattle price is little bit high this year thanks to soaring price of animal food and transport cost, said local farmers.
On the other side, buyers are facing troubles in purchasing cattle as price is a bit high compared to last Eid-ul-Azha.
There are different prices cattle are trading in city’s biggest Kalia Kandarpar market from at least Tk 40,000 to 2 lakh. But most customers sought cattle Tk 50,000 -80,000 tk, according to market authority.
Cattle now are being sold at Tk10,000 to 15,000 more than three months ago as the demand for domestic cattle is rising, said local farmers.
Police have taken all necessary measures to secure market from any kind of offenses including hijacking, oggan party and brokers. Currency screening machine has also been installed in different cattle markets of the district, said police official.
