183 Myanmar BGPs and 46 people including soldiers escaped

Due to the ongoing conflict inside Myanmar, 229 members of the Border Guard Police (BGP) have so far fled to Bangladesh with weapons. Of these, 183 are members of the BGP and 46 are members of the Myanmar Army and Immigration.

BGB says that those who entered Bangladesh with weapons have been disarmed and taken to safe haven.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) public relations officer said on Tuesday (February 6) at noon. Shariful Islam confirmed this information.

He said that BGB has taken shelter of BGP and other 229 members who have taken refuge in Bangladesh. Further action in this regard is under process.

According to BGB sources, additional patrols and check posts have been increased in the border areas. No Rohingyas are allowed to enter. BGB has increased round-the-clock surveillance on the border for the sake of the country.

Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi woman and a Rohingya citizen of Bandarban were killed by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar. The incident took place in the Jalpaitli area of Ward No. 4 of Ghumdhum UP of Naikxyongchari Upazila on Monday (February 5) afternoon. The deceased Hashina Begum (52) is the wife of Badsha Mia of that area. Besides, the identity of the Rohingya man killed (55) is not known.

Earlier, several mortar shells landed in Tambru area of Naikshyongchari during the shelling on Sunday. One named Prabir Dhar, son of Yudhisthira Dhar of that area, was injured.

Bangladesh has summoned the country’s ambassador Aung Q Moe in Dhaka to protest over the death of two people in a mortar shell from across the Myanmar border.

Also, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered the Bangladesh Armed Forces and BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) to be patient on the Myanmar issue. Law Minister Anisul Haque said this in response to a supplementary question by Jatiya Party Secretary General Mojibul Haque Chunnu during the Jatiya Sangsad question and answer session on Monday (February 5).

The law minister said that Bangladesh is monitoring the ongoing situation very closely and action will be taken soon. Considering the safety of the students, arrangements have been made to close some educational institutions on the border, said the law minister.

For more than five decades, Myanmar’s various armed rebel groups have been in conflict with the military. The conflict escalated after the junta seized power through a coup in 2021. Bangladesh shares a long border with Myanmar in the southeast.
